Bethesda's 40th anniversary celebration finally gave Elder Scrolls fans a proper title and a glimpse of Hammerfell. Unfortunately, we're still waiting for the actual game.
After more than eight years of waiting, Bethesda has finally revealed the official name of its next Elder Scrolls game.
The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel was unveiled on November 3, 2026, during a video celebrating 40 years of Bethesda Game Studios.
Todd Howard delivered the announcement near the end of the presentation, which looked back at the studio's history, including Fallout, Skyrim, and Starfield.
The reveal itself was brief. An Elder Scroll appeared partially buried in desert sand before the Sentinel logo was shown.
No gameplay, no release date, and no confirmed platforms.
So, pretty much what we've come to expect from Elder Scrolls VI announcements.

Still, the name tells us something interesting.
Sentinel is a major city and kingdom in Hammerfell, the homeland of the Redguards. The teaser also includes a cryptic message attributed to Yazar, a Moth Priest serving High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell.
The message is dated 4E 206, five years after the year in which Skyrim begins, although Bethesda hasn't confirmed when the new game's main story takes place.
The Hammerfell connection is particularly exciting because it offers a very different setting from Skyrim's snowy mountains.
Think sprawling deserts, ancient ruins, coastal cities, and the political rivalries of the Redguard kingdoms.
There's certainly plenty for Bethesda to work with.
Of course, just how much of Hammerfell we'll actually get to explore remains unknown.
The original Elder Scrolls VI announcement happened at E3 in June 2018, when Bethesda showed a short landscape teaser and little else.
Since then, the studio has released Starfield, continued supporting Fallout 76, and repeatedly assured fans that the next Elder Scrolls is in development.
Meanwhile, Skyrim is approaching its 15th anniversary, and people are still playing it, modding it, and finding new ways to accidentally kill themselves with physics glitches.
That's a pretty tough act to follow.
Bethesda has previously said that The Elder Scrolls VI is its primary development focus, with most of the studio working on the project.
But the company still isn't ready to say when we'll actually get our hands on it.
And after such a long wait, expectations are understandably enormous.
Fans want the freedom, exploration, and memorable quests that made Skyrim such a massive success. They'll also be watching closely to see how Bethesda responds to criticism of Starfield's exploration and world design.
For now, there's no way to judge any of that.
We haven't seen the combat, the world, the characters, or even a proper gameplay screenshot.
All we have is a name, a short teaser, and a pretty strong indication of where the adventure is heading.
It's good to finally have some actual news about The Elder Scrolls VI, even if it's not quite the reveal everyone was hoping for.
Now we just need Bethesda to show us the damn game.
And preferably before Skyrim gets released on another five platforms.
A look back at our legacy over the last 40 years and the journey ahead. https://t.co/wLj5XUORFN
